Nursemaid's elbow is a common injury that is seen most often in children between the ages of 1-3 years . Usually the child has had an incident in which the extended arm was pulled. Nursemaids elbow is an interposition of the annular ligament into the radial-humerus joint. The annular ligament normally passes around the proximal radius just below the radial head. If the forearm of a young child is pulled, by a parent or caregiver, it is possible for this traction to pull the radius into the annular ligament with enough force to cause it to be jammed in the joint. This causes significant pain, partial limitation of flexion/extension of the elbow and total loss of rotation in the affected arm.
